On December 12, 1972, Marie-Hélène de Rothschild, of the notorious Rothschild banking dynasty, one of the most powerful and wealthiest families, threw a party that was so different; it still inspires the dark theory that behind the doors of their mansions, the ultra rich are occultists engaged in unspeakable acts of evil. Conspiracy theorists believe them to be satanists and part of the Illuminati.
In reality this was a surrealist ball that had an impressive guest list such as Audrey Hepburn and Salvador Dali. Attendees received invitations with text written backwards that you could only read in a mirror and arrived to a mansion bathed in orange lighting meant to represent the building was on fire.
On arrival, guests had to pass through a kind of labyrinth of hell, made of black ribbons to look like cobwebs.
Once they made it through the maze, guests could meet their hosts, Marie-Hélène de Rothschild and Baron Alexis de Redé. The giant weeping “teardrops” of Marie-Hélène’s crying deer mask were actual diamonds. It is said that this party inspired the Kubrick film Eyes Wide Shut and was even filmed at one of the Rothschilds country estates.
